The person responsible for causing this traumatic incident and burdening the family with a mountain of medical bills is a man by the name of 83-year-old Malcolm Patterson. Riverside County sheriff’s investigators are recommending the county district attorney’s office file charges of “driving under the influence and causing injury” against Palm Desert resident Malcolm Paterson, 83, who was behind the wheel of the Chevy.
He told investigators he was going south on Portola Avenue when his car accelerated, forcing him to drive into the field.
Investigators determined nothing was wrong with the car and recent results from a blood-alcohol test showed Paterson had alcohol in his system. His exact BAL hasn’t been disclosed, but officials said it’s below the legal limit of 0.08. Still, they said, even a small amount of alcohol could affect someone’s driving ability.
